History
The Standard for Building Supplies since 1947
Standard Building Supplies has been in operation for over 50 years. The company's founder,
Mr. Stephan Nowak, formed a partnership in a lumberyard called Tecumseh Lumber in the early 1940's.
The partnership dissolved in 1947 and Mr. Nowak made the bold move to buy some land on the edge of
town and start his own lumberyard, calling it Standard. That pioneering move took him to Boundary and
Canada Way where the lumberyard became a well-known landmark. Stephan brought his three sons, Stan,
Hank and Ed into the family business at an early age. Stan, being the oldest, was the first to work
full time, then Hank and Ed after they finished their formal education. Stephan passed away in 1986,
Stan retired in 1990, the Boundary Road property was sold in 1990 and a new store built on Still Creek.
The company has experienced steady growth through the years due its high quality product selection and
friendly knowledgeable staff. Today, we still strive to provide a wide range of high quality products
with a younger generation of friendly staff. Times have changed, but there is still a need for the
personal, friendly service we always try to provide all our customers!
